Question
I am assigning tasks to a sprint. When I move the task to the sprint, the task dates change to match the sprint dates. Why?
Answer
Tasks with inherited dates will update to reflect the dates of the sprint when the task is assigned to a sprint. Inherited dates are identified by the asterisk (*) in the task start and end date fields. Tasks can inherit dates from projects, tasks and/or sprints. To learn more about using sprints in projects see, Using Sprints in Projects (SCRUM board).
To find if a task's dates are inherited
- Open the project.
- Go to Scoping.
- Locate the task.
- Review the task's start date and end date fields.
- An asterisk (*) next the task's dates indicates the task's dates were inherited.
- Click on either date to expand the calendar.
- At the bottom, the source of the inheritance is displayed.
Inherited task dates can be updated by setting the dates manually on the task from within Scoping or the task modal. You can set the same dates as were inherited manually to prevent them from updating to the sprint dates when the task is assigned to a sprint.
To prevent or update task dates from changing when assigned to a sprint
- Open the project.
- Go to Scoping.
- Select a task with inherited dates.
- Click into the task start date field.
- Two calendars will appear.
- Select the task's start date in the left calendar.
- Select the task's end date in the right calendar.
- The calendar will close and the asterisk (*) no longer appears for the dates.
- Repeat as many times as needed.
- When the tasks are assigned to a sprint, their dates will retain and not be updated to reflect the dates of the sprint.
