Why can't I update the Remaining Work Estimate setting in a project?

I want to change the Remaining Work Estimate in my project's settings, but the option is grayed out and won't let me change it. Why?

Answer

Most likely the project is synced with JIRA which restricts users from changing the remaining work setting within a project as the setting is controlled by the project's sync configuration.

To confirm a project's remaining work estimate setting is managed by JIRA

1. Open the project. 
2. Click Settings in the left side panel. 
3. Click Tasks. 
4. Scroll down to Remaining Work Estimate. 
5. Hover over the toggle for Manually. 
6. If the project's remaining work estimate is controlled by the JIRA sync, the following tooltip will display.
   

It is also possible to check the project's sync settings using the project's Settings > Integrations page. 

1. Open the project. 
2. Click Settings in the left side panel.
3. Click Integrations. 
4. Scroll down to the JIRA section to review the sync settings.
