Assigning people to tasks is one of the two resource management settings that Forecast offers. This functionality is particularly useful for projects using a Waterfall approach, as it is best used when you know exactly how a project will play out from start to finish and you have all of the dependencies within the project outlined from the start.

Waterfall approach to project management
In project management the waterfall approach refers to a sequential, linear process of managing projects. It follows a relatively strict order task completion and it is used when you know how a project will proceed from its start until its deadline. In Forecast this translates to being able to view your schedule people heatmap based on the tasks.
Assigning people to tasks
This part of the article will go over how this setting works and how it affects the resource heatmap.
How it Works
By choosing this resource management setting, the system will be basing all of its allocations in the schedule people page on Tasks and not on projects. This means that in the Resource Heatmap you will:
- View peoples schedule based on the tasks that they are working during that period
- When you wish to create a new allocation that is not Internal time or Time off (non-project options) it will be based on tasks.
Calculation of time on Resource Heatmap (Schedule People)
Due to the additional options presented with the Assigning people to tasks options, the schedule people heatmap will be affected differently by each setting. To learn more of these two additional settings and their behavior in the heatmap please visit our article Reviewing your resource heatmap (Schedule People).
